When my mother entered hospice, I traveled home to Ohio from Hawaii to lend a hand. Months later, I made the decision to return to my life and career in the islands. As I drove to California to ship my car, I stopped at the north rim of the Grand Canyon. While watching the desert sun set into the canyon from Bright Angel Point, I took the photo that became this painting.
"The Branches Between" describes not only the way the branches fill the void between night & day and sky & earth, but also the way I was feeling in that moment. I was on the bridge between my family and myself - between my personal ambitions and familial obligations. It was not an easy decision to drive away, and the gnarled, twisting branches of the pinyon pine visually capture the internal torment of my mind during that journey.
